COURSE DESCRIPTION: Lecture, discussion, and projects, training in theatrical lighting design; 3 cr. Provide the graduate level design & technical student an in-depth understanding of the design methods of stage lighting, including script analysis; research; generation of paperwork; calculation of field angles; prediction of color effects; and a thorough understanding of stage lighting science, terminology, aesthetics, and professionalism.

Course Objectives:

  • Student will build on knowledge gained in THRE1702 concerning advanced stage lighting practices.
  • Student will learn and practice the skills needed to perform the job of master electrician.
  • Student will learn basics of theatrical rigging and counterweight systems, so as to be able to safely utilize such equipment.
  • Student will learn how to create and maintain paperwork associated with lighting of staged productions.
  • Student will hone marketable skills and best practices so as to increase viability in job market.

Lighting Design I Syllabus

Course Objectives:

  • Student will become familiar with the process and tools utilized in creating and implementing a lighting design.  This will enable a student to interpret a light plot and paperwork, hang/cable/focus lighting equipment, and operate a lighting console for a production.
  • Student will understand the basic elements of lighting design and will be able to incorporate this knowledge into the design, creation, and analysis of lighting designs for theatrical productions.
  • Student will learn how to critically analyze and evaluate texts to the end of generating lighting design choices.
  • Student will learn to observe works of art and the world around them, reflecting on qualities of light and their emotional implications.
  • Student will develop skills of presentation of ideas and design choices.

Lighting Lab Syllabus

Course Objectives:

  • To build a working knowledge of Theatre Technology with an emphasis on lighting.
  • To become familiarized with the process and the tools involved in implementing a lighting design, enabling you to interpret a light plot and paperwork in order to hang, cable, focus, and run a show.
  • To participate in theatrical production through lighting installation and crewing of School of Theatre and OMT shows.
  • To experience and understand the best practices, processes, and procedures involved in upkeep and maintenance of theatrical equipment and theatre spaces.
  • To learn and practice safe working procedures.

Stage Lighting I Syllabus

Course Objectives:

  • To create an understanding of the basic elements of electricity and circuitry and physics of light applied to theatre practices, terms, and equipment used.
  • To cultivate and practice the skills allowing the student to operate as a stage lighting technician at OCU and at a variety of professional venues.
  • To familiarize the student with the terminology, processes, and tools utilized in creating and implementing a lighting design.  This will enable a student to interpret a light plot and paperwork, hang/cable/focus lighting equipment, and operate a lighting console for a production.
  • To prepare the student for further courses in Stage Lighting Design, where each student will have the opportunity to design lighting for production in a variety of spaces.
